Cloudways Bot Protection Overview – Cloudways Bot Protection Tutorial 2020 – Malcare Bot Protection

Cloudways has added a bot protection feature to all plans. It uses Malcare’s service to scan for bad bots and in theory blocks them. I have found that oftentimes it was letting what appeared to be bad bots through but this could be an anomaly of my setup. It’s a great free addon to your account and if you’re a Cloudways customer you should activate it!

  1. The Cloudways Bot Protection feature is a welcome feature but at least on my sertmedia.com domain it offered very little protection. I will be testing it on dailydrivertips.com to see the improvement for a website that does allow users to register.

  2. just .htaccsess put

    # BEGIN protect xmlrpc.php

    order allow,deny

    deny from all

    # END protect xmlrpc.php
    this code you will safe.

  3. Question on Cloudways setup:
Is it okay to use the following combination? is it redundant? is it good, bad or ugly?
Redis + Varnish + Autoptimize + Cache Enabler

  4. The bot protection feature is awesome…. It really blocks bad user agent bots, fake refferer traffic and fake traffic… After i activated the bot protection , my blog is only receiving real user traffic….

  5. Hi Scott,

Thank you for testing out the Bot Protection feature, I see there are things that need to be improved both when it comes to explaining things and also the effectiveness of its security.

The feature is in the early days and your feedback has definitely given us some parts of the future roadmap.

Moving forward the idea of this feature is to be as lightweight as possible and simple that also helps our customers cut down on their server hardware requirement while adding an essential layer of security on all our WP hosted sites.

    Thanks,
